We travel through part of the Yukon know as the Klonidike Loop to Dawson City and join the Top of The World Highway through Chicken and on to the Taylor Highway which takes us to Tok, Alaska. Much of this area is remote wilderness with spectacular scenery and frequent wildlife sightings such as Caribou herds.
At Dawson City a group visit to Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall will be arranged. This relic of the gold rush days features regular nightly can-can shows and serves great food. Gertie’s is run by KVA a local not for profit organisation. It is on this section we travel the Top of the World Highway between Dawson City and Chicken. Access across the river to the start of the highway is by vehicle ferry. No bridges in this remote area.
Chicken is a popular stop on the Taylor Highway. That may have something to do with the fact it is one of the few places you can buy fuel on this road. We tour the Pedro Gold Dredge No4 and you can take a town tour which includes “ Trisha’s School House’ as featured in the book by Ann Purdy. Later you can spend some time at the Chicken Creek Saloon the best bar in town, in fact the only bar in town.
Alaska’s 2nd largest city has a diverse range of shops and galleries selling native art, pottery and jewellery.
